Apply now for Central Desi's journalism fellowship

For the second year, we are hiring reporters to help tell nuanced stories about NJ's South Asian community.

It’s time to apply for the Central Desi Journalism Fellowship! As the only news organization serving New Jersey’s entire South Asian community, we cover a range of issues and work in collaboration with media partners including WNYC, The Gothamist and NJ Spotlight News.

We have ambitious plans to tell the story of the Desi diaspora through articles, audio, video and social media. If you want to engage local communities in nuanced storytelling that reflects their lived experiences, this opportunity is for you.

“In my previous work and through classes at journalism school, I was always told to write objectively, leaving my identity out of my writing. Central Desi has given me the freedom to write stories for us.”

Selena Patel, 2023-24 Central Desi fellow

What you will do as a fellow

During the fellowship, you will produce feature stories and social content, working closely with experienced editors who have decades of experience in traditional newsrooms and as journalism educators.

By the end, you will have:

  • reported and written monthly articles for publication on Central Desi and partner sites,

  • leveraged social media to distribute journalism and news to a targeted audience,

  • collaborated with an editorial team to brainstorm ideas and see them through, and

  • received training on community journalism and multimedia storytelling methods.

“My reporting fellowship at Central Desi has been an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and professional growth.”

Mariyum Rizwan, 2023-24 Central Desi fellow

Details to know

The fellowship runs December 1 - May 31 with an expected commitment of five hours per week. Fellows will receive a $3,000 stipend.

You must be based in New Jersey to apply, but you do not have to be South Asian to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of the community.

Students, recent grads and existing or aspiring journalists are all welcome.

If this sounds like the opportunity for you, fill out this short form by Oct. 31.

(And, if you know someone who may be interested, please pass this along to them!)
